Card toppers help to make card making easy!

Card toppers help to make card making easy! A card topper transforms a plain card blank into an attractive card. Use a card topper for a quick card making solution or if you want to add your own decorative touch, use the card topper as part of your own card design. There are many different types of card toppers available from craft stores and card making suppliers which will help you to make cards for all occasions.

What are Card Toppers?

Card toppers are ready assembled embellishments that are added to blank cards.
They are used to transform a plain card blank into an attractive card. While card toppers are a great way to make quick cards, they can also be added to cards that contain lots of hand crafted detail such as hand colored images and stitching. Types of card topper include ready made and themed designs on a piece of card stock and three dimensional items made from polymer clay or other similar material.

Using Card Toppers

Card toppers are very straight forward to use. They are simply attached to the front of a card using glue or double sided tape. Some card toppers come complete with double sided tape to make fixing even easier. One of the benefits of using card toppers is that are quick way to make cards, simply add a card topper and stamp a sentiment or greeting for a fast handmade card. This means that card toppers are ideal for mass producing cards or invitations. However it is also very easy to customize card toppers by adding more embellishments.

Buying Card Toppers

Card toppers are available from card making supply stores and craft shops, as well as from online retailers. Card toppers can be purchased as single units or in multi-packs for when you have a lot of cards to make. It is also possible to buy handmade card toppers from card makers and fellow crafters. Discount card toppers are often found at the end of a season or after a celebration such as Christmas or Halloween and this can be a great opportunity to buy low-cost card toppers for the next year.

Make Your Own Card Toppers

While it is possible to buy card toppers for every occasion, you can also make your own. Use small panels of card stock to assemble your designs. This is a handy way to ensure that you have a supply of your own card toppers to hand. Make card toppers using your favorite rubber stamps and add embellishments such as ribbon, buttons and brads.

Tips for Using Card Toppers

Here are some tips for making the most from card toppers:
·                                 Make the card topper blend into your card design by color coordinating embellishments, card stock and ink. This will give the card a more complete design and stop it from looking as though the card topper has been added as an after thought.
·                                 To really make your card topper stand out, use glue dots or adhesive foam pads to attach the card topper to the card.
·                                 Remember that card toppers will add to the bulk of your card, therefore they may need additional protection when packaged in an envelope to stop the card topper from getting squashed or damaged.

Tips for making great Christmas Cards

Tips for making great Christmas Cards

Beautiful handmade cards can be created with the minimal amount of equipment or expertise. Rubber stamps are ideal for creating special handmade cards. Even a complete beginner can create lovely handmade card that are bound to be much appreciated. One of the keys to making a great handmade card is to keep it personal. Regardless of how technically good a card is - it is the ones with the little extra personal touch that will always be remembered!

What Makes a Great Handmade Card?

Handmade cards are special because they are made by hand! Most people are touched and flattered by the fact that someone has put stamp to paper to create a special card. The fact that someone has taken time out of a busy schedule to actually make a card is always appreciated.

So, all handmade cards are special, but what actually makes a handmade card GREAT? There are many answers to this! A great card incorporates a little extra thought. Don't worry if you don't have the latest stamps - or top of the range inks, what really matters is creating a card specially for the recipient.

Keep it Simple!

It is so tempting to adorn a card with lots of embellishments – however when making a handmade card, often less is more. A very elegant card can be achieved by placing a small stamped image onto a card blank and adding a simple message. Adding lots of extra embellishments will detract from the design of the card.

Add a Border

A simple border will really 'finish' a handmade card.
It is possible to buy ready cut frames that can be used to frame stamped or other images. If you are attaching an image to a card that has been stamped onto paper, adding a frame will disguise any cut edges. Printable borders are ideal for using with rubber stamps to make quick Christmas cards

Pick a Great Greeting

A very simple rubber stamped image and a thoughtful greeting will create a lovely card. Greetings are a great way to make a card special. This is also perfect for personalizing cards. The same card can be used and personalized for different recipients by changing the sentiment or adding a few special words.

Embellishments

Paper or cardstock embellishments can be made using a craft or paper punch. This can be used to punch out shapes which can be added to the cards. Add embellishments to cards with glue dots for a raised image and to give depth to the card.

Text

Text is an important feature in a greeting card, the right sentiment tells the recipient how you feel and makes the card extra special. While it would be great to own text rubber stamps for every occasion, the reality is often very different. It is possible to print text from a computer for rubber stamped projects and this can be incorporated into the finished design. This opens up a whole range of text opportunities that can work well with any rubber stamped greeting card project.

Design Tips

·                                 Less is More! An extremely effective card can be created by using a small stamp on a large plain sheet of card.
·                                 Tapestry stamps can be used to create wreaths or frames for cards.
·                                 For a formal effect try laying the stamped designs out in a structured way, for instance evenly spaced in rows or columns.

Card making tips for beginners.

Applying Images to Cards

If images have been stamped onto paper or cardstock prior to being attached to the card, they need to be attached to the card so that the end result looks well designed. Giving the paper or cardstock a patterned edge can help give a professional finish. This can be achieved in different ways:

·                                 Tearing paper gives a textured edge and this can be colored to complement the finished design.
Scissors that cut leaving a patterned edge are available in many styles and these are a uuseful way to add pattern in a uniform way.

Colour

A good color scheme can help create the perfect card. Some basic principles such as using pastel colors for babies are ways of defining a design for the card. Color can be added in a number of ways including using colored paper or cardstock and coloring images. Chalks, inks and marker pens are all good ways of adding color to a stamped image and produce different finished effects:
·                                 Chalks: These give gentle coloring and are good where subtle or muted shades are required.
·                                 Inks: Some inks can be used as paints and can be painted on to images.. The colors can be diluted to produce light colors or used straight from the pad for deeper shades.
·                                 Marker Pens: Special marker pens can be purchased for coloring stamped images, although normal marker pens work well too. These give rich colors in vibrant shades.
·                                 Embossing: Embossing powders are available in a wide range of colors and bring a professional touch to cards. Subtle effects can be achieved by clear embossing powder over a clear ink as this slightly deepens the color of the cardstock.

Card Making Tips for Beginners

Here are some ideas to get you started

Making Hand Stamped Cards

Many rubber stampers enjoy using their stamping skills to make greeting cards. Birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, births and many other special dates can all be marked with a special hand stamped greeting card. In addition to this there are numerous other occasions when a card is much appreciated such as simple 'thinking of you' cards through to the more unusual 'on your divorce'.

Great Project for Beginners

Making rubber stamped greeting cards are an excellent project for beginners. They present an ideal opportunity to practice new techniques or use a range of different stamps and they also are a wonderful way to produce one of a kind cards which cost much less than their store bought alternatives. Making greetings cards isn't difficult and a beginner can produce some lovely cards given very little in the way of special equipment or fancy techniques. Here are some tips to help beginners plan their first greeting card projects.

Stamping Technique

The image can be stamped directly onto the card or stamped onto paper or cardstock first. There are advantages to both techniques and the choice will largely depend on the type of project and the desired finished effect.

Advantages of stamping directly onto the card:
  • It is quicker to do
  • This is good for simple and uncluttered designs
  • Less paper or cardstock is required
Advantages of stamping onto paper or cardstock first:
  • An unclear or uneven stamped image will not result in the card being ruined
  • Multiple stamped images or collage effects can be achieved without the need to mask images
  • A good way to use up odds and ends
  • This is particularly effective for layering to give 3d or textured finishes
